Quick answer where the beach hotels actually are
For a proper beach holiday, Isla Barú. For the clearest water, the Rosario Islands, about an hour by boat. For a beach without losing the city, Tierra Bomba. Bocagrande is convenient, but the sand is grey.
The honest answer about beach hotels in Cartagena de Indias: the ones on a good beach are not in Cartagena. The city’s own beach at Bocagrande is grey sand and busy. The beachfront hotels people actually picture sit on Isla Barú, Tierra Bomba and the Rosario Islands, all of them reached by boat. Below is what each option gives you, what it costs, and the trade-off nobody mentions until you have booked. Every “10 best Cartagena beach hotels” list on the internet mixes these three completely different situations together, which is why people end up disappointed.

- Best beach hotel: the island properties on Isla Barú, led by Sofitel Barú and Las Islas. Boat or road access only.
- Best compromise: Tierra Bomba — 10 to 15 minutes by boat, so you can still have dinner in the old city.
- Bocagrande has beachfront towers, a real beach area and city convenience, but grey sand and vendors.
- Cost: beachfront and island resorts sit at the top tier; Bocagrande towers run far less, and the city hotels a few streets back are cheaper again. The map above shows live rates for your dates.
- ⚠ The trade-off: island hotels give you the sea, city hotels give you dinner on foot. Boats stop in the evening.
Where this comes from. Property details, locations and rate bands were read from published 2026 hotel and travel sources on 13 August 2026. We have not stayed at these hotels — see our editorial policy. We do not quote nightly prices per property because Cartagena rates swing with season and booking window; the bands below tell you the tier.
Where the Cartagena beach hotels actually are
Colombia’s Caribbean coast has plenty of great beach, but very little of it is inside the city limits. Sorting accommodation by where the sand is rather than by star rating is the only way this decision makes sense.
| Area | Getting there | The beach | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isla Barú | 45–55 min boat, or 1.5–2 h road | White sand, clear shallows | A proper beach holiday |
| Rosario Islands | ~1 h by boat | The clearest water, coral | Snorkelling, seclusion |
| Tierra Bomba | 10–15 min boat | Clear-ish, better than the city | Beach without losing the city |
| Bocagrande | walk or taxi | Grey sand, vendors | Convenience, pools, families |
| Morros / north coast | ~20 min taxi | Long, quiet, unremarkable | Quiet, golf, longer stays |
This table is the whole article. Everything below is detail on each row.
The best beach hotels in Cartagena: Barú and the Rosario Islands

- Sofitel Barú is the best-known Cartagena beach resort and ranks first for this search for a reason: a large oceanfront hotel on Isla Barú with a proper beach, swimming pools, a spa and a fitness center.
- Las Islas, also on Barú, is the quieter luxury option — cabanas among the trees rather than a tower, and away from the Playa Blanca crowd.
- The Rosario Islands hold the smaller properties and the best water. Several of the day-pass beach clubs also take overnight guests.
- Barú is now reachable by road across the Barú bridge in 1.5 to 2 hours, which means you are not locked to the boat timetable. That single fact changes the calculation for anyone nervous about island isolation.
- A catamaran or private boat transfer is the usual arrival for the higher-end properties, and it is often included.
- These are the luxury hotels of the region. If you want a private beach rather than a public one, this is the only way to get it near Cartagena.

Tierra Bomba: the beach resort compromise
- 10 to 25 minutes by boat, usually on the hotel’s own boat. Blue Apple Beach leaves from Muelle de la Bodeguita and takes about 25 minutes.
- Smaller properties and beach club stays rather than full resorts. Blue Apple Beach is the best known.
- The water is clearer than the city and short of the Rosarios — but the crossing is so short that a night here does not cost you the trip.
- Best choice if you want to stay near the beach in Cartagena and still intend to spend evenings in the walled city, which sits just across the bay.
- Several Tierra Bomba properties run as a beach club by day and take overnight guests as well, which is a cheaper way into the same sand.
Bocagrande: a Cartagena beach resort in the city itself

- This is the only beach area where you can walk from your hotel to the old city, or at least take a five-minute taxi.
- The towers along the seafront include international names — Hyatt Regency among them, and IHG brands including Holiday Inn have properties in the city.
- Hotel Almirante and the older Bocagrande properties are the mid-range end, with ocean view rooms at a fraction of island prices.
- ⚠ The beach is grey sand and heavily worked by vendors. Nobody comes to Cartagena for the Bocagrande beach; people book here for the pool, the lift and the location.
- If a private beach matters, that means an island property. Bocagrande beaches are public and busy.
- Boutique alternatives inside the walls — Casa San Agustín and the other colonial conversions — have rooftop pools instead of beaches. For a short trip to Cartagena that is usually the better trade.
What the rooms and facilities are actually like
Two things separate the best beach hotels in Cartagena from the rest, and neither is the star rating.
- Air-conditioned hotel rooms are non-negotiable on this coast. Older island cabanas sometimes run fans only, which is fine in January and unbearable in September.
- The pool matters more than the beach. An infinity pool with lounge chairs and a great view over the water is what you will actually use; the sand is often narrow and shared.
- Five-star here means colonial or island, not high-rise. A 5 star label on a Bocagrande tower usually means a good gym and a lift, not a better beach.
- Activities for kids are thin at the boutique island properties, which are built for couples. Bocagrande and the larger resorts are the family answer.
- Dreams Karibana, north of the city near Morros, is the large resort-and-golf option for anyone wanting a beach resort in Cartagena without an island boat ride.
What to consider before you stay in Cartagena

- How many nights? Under four, stay in the city and do a beach day. The transfer time eats a short trip.
- Do you want dinner options? Island resorts mean eating where you sleep, every night. That is fine for three nights and wearing by six.
- Traveling with children? Bocagrande, for the pools and the ability to leave. Island resorts with small children mean no escape valve.
- Couples? The Rosario Islands and the quieter Barú properties. This is where the seclusion is.
- All-inclusive resorts? A handful of Cartagena beach resorts and hotels run all-inclusive packages, mostly on the islands. Read what is included — boat transfers often are not.
- Want lots of restaurants within walking distance? Then you want the colonial city, not a beach. El Centro and Getsemaní put the main attractions and a hundred kitchens inside a fifteen-minute walk.
- Where do you want to be at 20:00? That single question sorts most people. Answer “the city center” and no beach resort will satisfy you.
- Areas, walking times and accommodation rate bands across the whole city are in our where to stay in Cartagena guide, and the top-ranked Cartagena hotels are in best hotels in Cartagena.
Which of the best beaches is actually the nicest?

- The Rosario Islands for water clarity, coral and snorkelling. Nothing on the mainland compares.
- Playa Blanca on Barú for the postcard white sand, at the cost of crowds and persistent vendors from mid-morning.
- Punta Arena on Tierra Bomba for the best ratio of quality to effort.
- La Boquilla, north of the city, is the best mainland beach and where the mangrove tours run.
- None of the beaches in Cartagena proper make a list of the best beaches in Colombia. That is not a flaw in the city, it is just what a working port produces.
- Full comparison with boat costs and day-pass prices is in our best beaches in Cartagena guide.
Checking current rates in Cartagena
Everything above is about position — which area suits which kind of trip. What it deliberately does not do is quote prices, because rates in Cartagena move a long way by season, by day of the week and by how far ahead you book, and any figure printed in a guide is out of date the week after it is written.

These searches show live availability and current prices, so you can check them against the areas described above:

These are listed as landmarks, not recommendations. Nobody here has stayed in them and we do not print rates. Check current prices and availability yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best beach hotel in Cartagena?
The island properties rather than anything in the city. Sofitel Barú and Las Islas on Isla Barú are the two names that lead this category, both with real beaches, pools and spas. If you want to keep the old city within reach, Blue Apple Beach on Tierra Bomba is the compromise at about 25 minutes by boat.
Are there beachfront hotels in Cartagena itself?
Yes, along Bocagrande, including international brands. They are genuinely on the sand and close to the old city, but the beach is grey and busy with vendors. Book Bocagrande for the pool and the location, not for the beach.
What is the nicest beach in Cartagena?
The Rosario Islands for clear water and coral. Playa Blanca on Isla Barú has the white sand of the photographs but gets crowded from mid-morning. On the mainland, La Boquilla north of the city is the best of a weak field.
How much does a beach hotel in Cartagena cost?
Island and beachfront resorts sit in the top tier. Bocagrande towers with an ocean view run far less, and mid-range city hotels less again, with high season lifting all of them. We do not quote nightly rates per property, because Cartagena rates move with the season and the booking window — the map above shows live prices for your dates.
Should you stay on an island or in Cartagena?
In the city for trips under four nights, on an island if the beach is the whole point. Boats stop running in the evening, so an island hotel means dinner where you sleep. Tierra Bomba, at 10 to 15 minutes, is the one that lets you have both.
Are there all-inclusive beach resorts near Cartagena?
A handful, mostly on Isla Barú and the Rosario Islands. Check whether the boat transfer is included — it frequently is not, and it is a meaningful cost on top of the room.
